In Can

A look into the future shows that canned beer is becoming increasingly popular. Where in the past mainly lager was in cans, nowadays more and more specialty beers from (micro)breweries are also packaged in this. Although the contents of a can are the same as that of a bottle, there are some differences.

What exactly are the distinguishing features of canned beer compared to bottled beer?

  1. An important advantage of canned beer is that it remains completely sealed off from oxygen. This helps keep the beer's taste as intended for longer. When beer is exposed to oxygen for too long, the aging process can accelerate, resulting in a sour taste with notes of butyric acid and acetic acid.
  2. In addition to the fact that the can does not allow oxygen to pass through, it also offers complete protection against light, which optimally protects the beer against oxidation. Exposure to light can make beer taste stale and smell less fresh. Although many brewers already opt for brown bottles because of their better light protection, cans offer an even more effective solution.
  3. Although it does not directly affect the quality of the beer, cans do provide additional space for information – something many brewers find interesting. Some brewers use this space to share extensive information, while others design the can more strikingly to stand out among the other beers on the shelf.
  4. An additional advantage of canned beer is that it takes up less space. A 33cl can is more compact than a bottle of the same capacity, which offers advantages in transport and storage. This allows more cans to fit on shelves or beer packages, which is more efficient for both brewers and retailers.
  5. A nice advantage of canned beer is that it cools down faster than beer in a bottle. The thin layer of metal around the beer causes the temperature to drop faster in the refrigerator. The disadvantage of this is that the beer also warms up a little faster once it comes out of the refrigerator, compared to beer in a bottle.

Does tin give a metallic taste to beer? Although some beers may have a metallic taste, this is not due to the can itself. Metallic taste is often caused by the use of specific water or by mistakes during the brewing process. Beer cans are specially coated so that the material does not affect the taste of the beer.
